Peter urges believers to grow in virtue: faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly affection, and love. His eyewitness testimony of Christ’s transfiguration confirms prophetic Scripture, which came by the Holy Spirit—not by human invention.

False teachers will secretly introduce destructive heresies, exploit with stories they’ve made up, and indulge in sensuality. Like ancient angels, the flood-world, Sodom, and Balaam, they face swift destruction, while the righteous (as Lot) are rescued. Their empty promises and enslaving corruption end in a worse state than at first.

Scoffers question the promised return, but God’s timing is patient, desiring repentance before the day that will come like a thief—earth burned up. Therefore, live holy and godly lives as you look for the new heavens and new earth where righteousness dwells. Paul’s letters share this hope; guard against error and grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
