Chapter 1

Zephaniah

Zephaniah, prophesying in Josiah’s reign, announces a sweeping ‘Day of the LORD’: God will wipe away humans, beasts, birds, and fish, then stretch His hand against Judah and Jerusalem—cutting off Baal worship, syncretistic priests, royal officials, merchants, and the complacent who say, “The LORD will not do good or ill.” The nearing day is pictured as darkness, wailing, bitter distress, ruined houses, and blood-stained streets; silver and gold cannot save when the LORD’s fiery jealousy consumes the whole earth.

Chapter 2

Zephaniah

Before that day strikes, Zephaniah urges the humble to seek the LORD that they may be sheltered. Oracles follow against Israel’s neighbors: Philistia’s coastal cities (Gaza, Ashkelon, Ashdod, Ekron) will become pastures for Judah; Moab and Ammon will end like Sodom for mocking God’s people; Cushites will be slain by His sword; proud Assyria and its capital Nineveh will be left a desolate desert, hosting owls and wild beasts.

Chapter 3

Zephaniah

Jerusalem itself is condemned as a rebellious, violent city whose leaders and prophets are ravenous, yet the righteous LORD still dwells within her. After judging nations, God promises to purify their speech so all serve Him together. A humble, truthful remnant of Israel will dwell securely. Zion is called to sing, for the LORD has taken away her judgments, is in her midst, and will rejoice over her with singing. He will gather the lame and exiles, turn shame into praise, and restore their fortunes before the watching world.
